Flights to China from the UK: airports, onward journeys and baggage
Plan Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hangzhou itineraries with clear airports, documents and separate Hong Kong checks.
Planning guidance updated . Fares, schedules and entry conditions must be checked for your trip. How we prepare our travel guidance.
Use the airport code as well as the city
Beijing and Shanghai itineraries need the specific arrival and departure airports, not just the city name. Ask whether any connection changes airports and whether ground transport is included. A city-wide search can be useful for price comparisons, but the confirmed itinerary must identify the airport you will use.
Plan a different-city return
For Beijing followed by Shanghai, compare flying into the first city and home from the second. Tell us whether the intermediate trip will be a flight arranged by us or a rail journey you organise yourself. Include time to collect luggage and reach the final international check-in.
Separate mainland and Hong Kong document checks
A Hong Kong visit and mainland China travel do not have interchangeable entry arrangements. Nationality, passport type, purpose, route and stay length can matter. Check official requirements for the complete journey, including any onward country, before buying a ticket that depends on a transit exemption.
Bring onward baggage into the first quote
If the trip includes a separately booked domestic flight, compare its allowance with the international ticket. Describe the number and weight of bags instead of simply asking for “extra luggage”. Ask how an oversized item or mobility aid will be handled on each operating carrier.
Official sources
Check the official source again before booking; a general guide cannot confirm an individual fare, permission or entitlement.
Your questions answered
Can I book London–Beijing and return from Shanghai?
Yes, request a different-city return with the Beijing arrival date and Shanghai departure date. Specify who will arrange travel between the cities. This gives the agent a complete itinerary to price and avoids adding an unnecessary flight back to Beijing solely for the journey home.
How do I compare Manchester to Guangzhou flights without a London connection?
State that the itinerary must start at Manchester and exclude a London transfer. Compare the actual connection offered, its airport-change requirements, baggage handling and final arrival date. Do not assume that a flight marketed as “from Manchester” has no London sector.
Does a long layover in China mean I can enter without a visa?
Not automatically. Transit arrangements depend on passport eligibility, ports, permitted areas and onward routing. A return to the same country may be treated differently from onward travel to a third destination. Check the relevant official rules for the exact itinerary before treating the layover as a stopover.
