UK to USA and Canada: connections, regional airports and multi-city trips
Compare transatlantic and domestic tickets, airport changes, entry documents and different-city returns.
Planning guidance updated . Fares, schedules and entry conditions must be checked for your trip. How we prepare our travel guidance.
Quote the final destination
A fare to a major US gateway is not the cost of reaching a smaller regional airport. Include the last flight, its checked bags and the time spent connecting. For a California trip, identify the arrival airport, planned road travel and the airport for the UK return before comparing an all-in-air itinerary.
Allow for the arrival process
Ask the operating airline and airport about immigration, baggage collection, customs and re-checking for your exact connection. An advertised minimum connection is not a personal guarantee of enough time. When queues cause a missed onward flight, contact the airline before buying a replacement and keep receipts and the original itinerary.
Keep admission checks separate
An itinerary through the USA can create US-document requirements even if the final destination is Toronto. Canadian visa or eTA eligibility depends on the traveller’s circumstances and nationality; UK residence alone does not answer the question. Use the Canadian eligibility checker and the relevant US authorities for the proposed route.
Design a New York–Orlando–Miami visit
Set the nights in New York, Orlando and Miami first, then compare returning from Miami against going back to New York. Choose whether the Florida transfer is a flight or independently arranged road travel. Check airport codes on every sector, particularly a New York or Washington-area airport change.
Official sources
Check the official source again before booking; a general guide cannot confirm an individual fare, permission or entitlement.
Your questions answered
What happens if US customs delays make me miss a connecting flight?
Tell the operating airline as soon as the connection is at risk. The response depends on the ticket arrangement and circumstances; do not assume a separate domestic ticket will be replaced free. Keep evidence of timings, and ask about the next available option and any charge before authorising it.
Can a travel agent combine transatlantic and US domestic flights?
Yes, an agent can price a complete journey or compare separate bookings. Request the ticket grouping in writing, a baggage breakdown and the plan for disruption. For a regional arrival such as Wichita or Fort Wayne, compare the total against a gateway airport plus the onward transport you would otherwise buy.
Is premium economy the same as an extra-legroom economy seat?
No. Ask for the marketed cabin name, seat type and operating aircraft on the long-haul sector. A preferred or extra-legroom economy seat is not a separate premium-economy cabin. Domestic connections may use a different product even when the transatlantic flight is premium economy.
Can you help with a last-minute change to a UK–USA booking?
Contact the ticket issuer with the booking reference, departure time and acceptable replacement dates. If our agency issued the ticket, we can request a repricing and explain any difference or service charge. If another seller issued it, that seller may need to handle the change; do not create a duplicate booking while the first ticket remains unresolved.
What if a delay at Heathrow affects a multi-airline USA ticket?
Check whether the flights form a protected through booking or separate tickets. If the first flight is delayed, contact the operating airline and issuing agent promptly for rebooking guidance. Keep receipts and written notices, and do not assume that a separate domestic fare will be changed free of charge. The cause of disruption, ticket conditions and applicable passenger rights determine the remedy.
