Choose a stopover by the whole journey
For a family, compare the flight lengths, local arrival hour, hotel check-in and the onward departure after the stop. A two-day break can be restful if it provides two useful nights; two calendar dates between flights might offer much less rest. A stopover hotel, transfer or visa is not included just because the airline connects there.
Avoid Heathrow when that matters to you
Request Birmingham or Manchester as the actual first departure airport, with no London sector or self-transfer. For Sydney or Brisbane, compare the offered connecting route and journey time rather than taking a London fare and assuming the regional departure costs the same.
Split the visit before splitting the tickets
List Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Perth in the intended order. Compare an international fare with domestic sectors against separately booked flights, including bags and recovery time after delays. Different-city arrival and departure can reduce backtracking without requiring separate tickets.
Compare travel windows fairly
There is no guaranteed cheapest month for every UK–Melbourne route. Request identical passenger and baggage quotes for several permissible date ranges, including the return. Include any peak-event hotel costs at the stopover and avoid interpreting a low outbound fare as a low return-trip total.

Compare the actual connection in Singapore or Doha, total travel time and the fare’s baggage and change conditions. For a planned stop, compare hotel nights and transfers as a second total. If a route includes a partner-operated sector, inspect that cabin too; the headline airline does not describe every seat.
Qantas or Emirates for Melbourne: is economy comfort comparable?
Check the operating airline, aircraft and seat selection for each leg. An Emirates-marketed or Qantas-marketed itinerary can include a partner flight. Compare overnight sectors, connection lengths and the total price with your chosen seats, rather than assuming the ticketing airline determines the onboard experience.
Can I add a two-day stopover to Birmingham–Sydney flights?
Yes, request a stay with arrival and onward dates instead of a short transit. Ask for two usable hotel nights and a suitable onward check-out plan. The agent must reprice that routing and check stopover admission requirements; an existing transit ticket may need a change and additional payment.
Emirates or Etihad: which stopover lounge is better from London?
First check whether your exact fare or status includes lounge entry at the connecting airport. A stopover hotel and a transit lounge solve different needs: a family needing sleep may prefer a room, while a short connection may not leave time to use a lounge. Compare access hours, terminal, showers, guest rules and the total price. Do not pay for a premium ticket assuming every lounge is included.
How do Emirates and Qatar Airways compare for Birmingham to Brisbane?
Request both options for the same dates and baggage needs. Compare the actual operating flights, connection duration, Brisbane arrival time and any different airline on a segment. If you want a Dubai or Doha stay, price it as an intentional stopover with hotel nights. Neither the brand nor an advertised starting fare establishes which option suits your party.
