British Airways booking reference or ticket number: which do you need for help?
Understand a BA booking reference, e-ticket receipt and agency reference when checking flights or requesting a change.
Keep your airline booking reference and e-ticket receipt together. The booking reference helps retrieve the reservation; the ticket receipt helps establish what has been issued and which company should handle changes.
When a support team asks for a reference, sending the wrong number can slow a simple request. A quotation number, agency invoice and airline reservation code can all appear in the same email chain, but serve different purposes.
Separate a quotation from a ticket
A quote describes an offer at a particular time. A reservation records the itinerary, while a ticket is the issued travel document. Paying a deposit or receiving a quotation does not by itself prove ticket issuance.
Ask your seller to confirm the ticket status and provide the e-ticket receipt. Check that the names and flights on that receipt match what you accepted, especially if dates changed during the quotation process.
Use the airline reference for retrieval
British Airways provides Manage My Booking for reviewing reservations. Use the reference requested by that service together with the relevant passenger details.
If a booking cannot be retrieved, recheck spelling and ask the seller whether a separate airline reference applies. A retrieval problem is worth investigating, but is not sufficient evidence on its own that the ticket is invalid.
Send a focused support request
For a change request, give the existing date, desired date, route and whether all passengers are changing. If only one person is affected, say so clearly because the booking may need separate handling.
Use the agency’s verified contact route. Keep reference numbers out of public reviews or social-media posts, where someone else could combine them with your surname.
Check the operating airline as well
A BA flight number and a flight operated by another carrier can appear together. Confirm the operating carrier, check-in instructions and baggage information for each flight.
When onward travel is involved, ask the issuer to review the whole journey. Do not independently change a single sector without understanding how it affects the remaining ticket.
What to send when the booking cannot be found
Start with the surname as issued, the travel date, the route and the airline reference shown on your latest document. Tell the seller which service you tried and copy the error message without posting the reference publicly. That gives the team a useful starting point while keeping your booking details private.
If an earlier itinerary was replaced, check that you are not opening an old attachment. Ask the issuer to send one clearly labelled current itinerary with the relevant references. Keep the invoice for your payment records, but use the reference requested by the airline when retrieving the reservation.
Before you book
- Your priority
- Keep your airline booking reference and e-ticket receipt together. The booking reference helps retrieve the reservation; the ticket receipt helps establish what has been issued and which company should handle changes.
- Before authorising payment
- Keep references private and ask for an issued e-ticket receipt, not just a reservation screenshot.
- Booking help
- Send your UK airport, dates, traveller names as shown on passports and any assistance requirements. Do not send card security codes or full card numbers in an enquiry.
Your questions answered
Is my agency invoice number the BA reference?
Not necessarily. Ask your seller to label the agency reference, airline reference and ticket number clearly.
Does a booking reference prove payment?
A reservation reference alone is not proof of payment or ticket issuance. Retain the receipt and ask the issuer to confirm status.
Can another agent manage the ticket?
Access and servicing authority depend on how it was issued. Start with the original seller; a different agency cannot promise control of every booking.
Why do two references appear on my confirmation?
An agency and an airline can use different reservation references, and another operating airline may have its own. Ask your issuer to label them. Several references do not by themselves mean that the flights are on separate tickets.
